Chemistry
p-block elements for JEE Main & Advanced — trends, anomalies, and important compounds
Why p-block is bulky but predictable once you learn comparison ladders, across both exam levels.
On JEE Main
Main tests acid strengths, halide reactivity trends, anomalous behaviour of N/O family elements, and noble gas compound basics in single-correct MCQ format. Build ladders: oxidising strength, reducing strength, thermal stability of hydrides and oxides.
On JEE Advanced
Advanced uses multi-correct and paragraph formats comparing compounds across groups simultaneously — for example, structure and hybridisation of XeF4 alongside IF5 and BrF5. Reaction-mechanism reasoning for p-block interhalogen and oxyacid reactions appears in integer-type questions.
How to practise
Practise p-block on PracticeJEE in short sessions grouped by group number to avoid overload.
