Kinematics for JEE Main & Advanced — motion, graphs, and exam weight

How kinematics is tested differently on JEE Main vs Advanced, covering SUVAT, variable acceleration, and relative motion.

On JEE Main

JEE Main sets 1–2 kinematics MCQs: SUVAT on a slope, a projectile with a clean landing condition, or a river–boat relative motion setup. Correct formula selection and sign convention consistency decide the mark. Most losses are arithmetic, not conceptual.

On JEE Advanced

Advanced raises the bar to multi-correct and integer-type formats. x–t, v–t, and a–t graphs are tested for both reading and sketching. Variable acceleration handled with calculus, two-body constrained motion, and frame-switching problems appear regularly. A quick relative-velocity diagram often reveals the shortcut before any algebra begins.

How to practise

Use PracticeJEE's Physics → Kinematics chapter sets with the timer on. Draw diagrams and label axes before writing equations, then compare your method with the solution to spot faster routes.
